High school students learning to cook often struggle with using kitchen tools safely due to text-heavy manuals and unengaging resources. To address this, an infographic was designed to visually break down a blender into its key parts and demonstrate each step of safe operation. Clear hierarchy, concise labelling, and bold contrast guide the viewer’s eye, making the information easy to follow. The final design turns a complex tool into an accessible learning resource that helps young culinary learners build confidence and safety in the kitchen.

Visualizing Object Functionality

Gaining a better understanding of the image and how it reacts in different lighting

The research began by identifying high school students aged 14–18 as the main audience, focusing on those learning basic cooking skills and needing clear, visual guidance on how to use a kitchen blender safely. To meet this need, the project aimed to simplify information using strong visual hierarchy, clear labelling, and balanced composition. I photographed and studied the Ninja Kitchen Blender from multiple angles to understand how each part functions, such as the lid, blades, and buttons. These photos served as references for creating accurate vector illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, helping the final design communicate both how the blender works and how to use it safely through simple, engaging visuals.

Research and Observation

The sketching process began by using the reference photos of the Ninja Kitchen Blender to create accurate vector drawings in Adobe Illustrator. Each sketch focused on capturing form, proportion, and material detail to ensure the object was realistic and easy to recognize. During layout development, different composition styles were tested to find the most effective way to guide the viewer’s eye. Principles such as visual hierarchy, alignment, and whitespace were applied to create balance and flow across the page. Early drafts explored how text, images, and labels could work together, helping refine the final layout into a clear, structured, and visually engaging infographic.

Initial Sketches and Layout Designs

Drawing the object in Illustrator, creating improved iterations to obtain the realistic appeal

During the visual development stage, the focus was on creating an infographic that balanced clarity with visual energy for a younger audience. Multiple colour palettes were tested to make the blender illustration stand out while maintaining harmony with the surrounding content. Bright, saturated tones were chosen to convey creativity and engagement, supported by complementary colour contrasts and mesh gradients that enhanced depth and visual flow. Several typefaces including Agency FB, Impact, and Berlin Sans FB, were compared to find a bold yet approachable style suited for teens. The layout emphasized whitespace, alignment, and visual rhythm to keep information readable and well-organized. Through feedback and iteration, the final design achieved a strong visual hierarchy that feels both professional and playful.

Final refinements were informed by peer and instructor feedback, leading to design adjustments that enhanced clarity, balance, and visual flow. The layout was reorganized to establish a stronger instructional hierarchy, beginning with the title and description, followed by five illustrated steps supported by concise labels and imagery. Alignment, spacing, and scale were refined to improve readability and rhythm throughout the composition. Colour contrast and complementary accents were adjusted to increase accessibility and guide users smoothly between labels and components. The typographic pairing of Brush Script MT Italic and Source Serif Variable created a balance between expressiveness and legibility, while a dark oak tone (#30201C) added warmth and visual cohesion. Together, these refinements reinforced both the clarity and aesthetic consistency of the final infographic.

Refinement and Peer Feedback

Displaying the changes implemented via peer feedback and adding small elements to enhance the visual design

The final infographic clearly presents five step-by-step instructions for safely using a kitchen blender, emphasizing clarity, balance, and readability through refined typography, colour, and hierarchy. The title was updated to Brush Script MT Italic for a more welcoming tone, while the subtitle in Source Serif Variable Bold established stronger structure and flow. Maroon label lines improved contrast and maintained harmony within the warm colour palette. A subtle Michelin Star–inspired pattern in the top-right corner filled negative space and guided the viewer’s eyeline through the composition. Overall, the design achieves a clean, approachable aesthetic that demonstrates growth in layout composition, typographic pairing, and visual storytelling—key skills that strengthen effective communication through design.
